Mack Family Foundation Distributes One Hundred Boxes of Food

University of Louisville Men’s Basketball Head Coach Chris Mack was on hand with his wife Christi at the West Broadway Kroger Thursday evening to distribute boxes of food to inner-city families as part of the Mack Family’s Foundation’s ‘Food for Thought’ program.

The Macks, who were joined by several of the University’s basketball players, packed one hundred boxes filled with nutritional, nonperishable grocery items in dozens of families’ vehicles as they drove through the program’s distribution center in the Kroger parking lot. The boxes will feed more than a hundred students for the first weeks of summer break.

Seventy-six of the boxes were distributed to families on Thursday night. The remaining 24 were delivered to local Boys & Girls Clubs to supply families who were unable to attend the program in person due to transportation barriers.

Thousands of inner-city students rely on their school’s free and reduced lunch program for their daily meals. When schools close their doors for extended periods of time, such as summer break, these students often go without regular meals.

The Macks launched the ‘Food for Thought’ meal distribution program to address this need, ensuring that these one hundred students can kick off their summer break without the concern of missing meals.

‘Food for Thought’ was made possible through support from Kroger, who has also partnered with the Mack Family Foundation on its annual ‘Back to School’ program in August as well.

‘Food for Thought’ is a food security program created to directly impact inner-city elementary students in Louisville. Throughout each year, the ‘Food for Thought’ program plans to distribute 45,000 meals to students in need through food pantries located in schools and meal distribution events like the one on Thursday evening.
